Robert Ayres was born in 1892 and worked in the coal mining industry until the outbreak of the Great War. Entering the war in France on 25 July 1915 he served until being demobilised on 15 January 1919 (Victory medal 1914-1919). He returned home to Micklesfield, Yorkshire; sold together with two named sets of dog tags, a Queen Mary Christmas Tin and a cap badge.
