Pair: Private W. Staley, 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, who was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 17 September 1916

Walter Staley was born at Clay Cross, Derbyshire in 1894, the son of George and Annie Staley. Marrying Maud Staley of Mill Row, Clay Cross, Chesterfield he enlisted at Clay Cross he entered the war at Gallipoli on 12 December 1915 but was soon evacuated with this unit. Instead they were posted to France, joining the build-up of troops on the Western Front in time for the Battle of the Somme.

They did not join the action until September at Bouzincourt but saw heavy fighting over the next fortnight including a two-day action between the German occupied Joseph Trench and British Constance Trench between 17-19 September. Staley was killed on 17 September, likely during the attack on Joseph Trench, he is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with typed research and copied research including an extract from Soldiers died in the Great War, Commonwealth War Graves certificate and photograph of the recipient's name on the Thiepval Memorial.
