Ernest Arthur Wood was born at Tonbridge, Kent in 1880 and attested for the Royal Artillery on 7 February 1901. Being posted to the 66 Battery, Royal Field Artillery in South Africa on 10 May 1902 he saw service here until 14 October when he was posted to India. Wood remained there for over six years before returning to Britain for discharge having seen twelve years of service.
Returning to the Colours on 12 August 1916, serving as a Driver he was posted to the 28th Brigade Ammunition Column. Dangerously wounded in the fighting on 11 September 1917 he was fortunate to survive however after three month of recovery he was invalided on 22 February 1918.
