India General Service 1895-1908, 1 clasp, Relief of Chitral 1895 (3314 Pte. T. McCandlish 2d. Bn. Seaforth Highrs.), good very fine
Thomas McCandlish went on to serve with the Regiment during the Boer War and was killed in action at Magersfontein on 11 December 1899. He is further commemorated upon the Dingwall Seaforth Highlanders Boer War Memorial, which is to be found on the corner of High Street and Station Road, Dingwall. It takes the form of a pale pink, dressed, granite, Ionic cross on a two-course rustic pedestal, above which are two proportionately dressed bases; there are Celtic carvings and regimental badges, in relief, on the shaft of the cross; the whole is surrounded by railings. It was first unveiled 6 August 1904, attended by Col. Sir Hector Munro Bt.
