Canada General Service 1866-70, 1 clasp, Fenian Raid 1870 (1177. Pte. Upfold. 69/S. Lin:R.), very fine
Richard Upfold was born at Woking, Surrey in 1845 and enlisted at Portsea on 4 October 1865 with the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment. He was soon found to belong to the Royal Sussex Militia, having attested the previous year and was subject to stoppages as a result. However Upfold continued to serve despite this and was rewarded good conduct pay in 1869. His Regiment was involved in British response to the 1870 Fenian Raids with the Government forces at the Battle of Trout River being led by Colonel George Bagot of the 69th; many of the regiment were also present at the fighting. Upfold served for another year after the raids when he was discharged on 29 August 1871; sold together with a Brass 69th Regiment Button and copied research comprising a casualty roll and service record.
