Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Guadaloupe (Robert Barlow, 90th Foot.), edge bruising, contact wear, nearly very fine

Provenance:
Baldwins, 1947.
Spink, 1971.

Robert Barlow was born at Blackburn, Lancashire on 2 May 1795 and enlisted with the 90th (Perthshire Volunteers) Foot on 6 March 1807, at the age of twelve. His occupation is listed as 'Miner' although this could be a misspelling of 'minor', a reference to his age. Serving throughout the Napoleonic Wars with this unit, he was with them during the invasion of Guadaloupe and the climatic action before the fortified Beaupere–St. Louis Ridge.

Barlow not only survived the engagement but went on to join the Royal Staff Corps on 1st May 1820. This is surprising as not only was the Staff Corps normally reserved for men of education - which he can hardly have had joining the Regiment so young - but also either Officers or N.C.O.s. Regardless Barlow was clearly capable of performing his role here as he served in this post for the next nine years until 10 November 1829 when the establishment was reduced and he was discharged; sold together with typed research and copied research including discharge papers, medal rolls and a former catalogue entry.
