Lot: 8204

India, Mughal Empire, Shah Jahan (1628-1658), gold Mohur, mule, 10.78g, Katak, AH1038, ry. 2 / ahd, kalima with mint name and date in bottom line, regnal year '2' to right of second line, rev. titles of Shah Jahan with 'Sahib Qirani' epithet and regnal year ahd in second line far left (KM 254 / 255.9), a very rare combination, possibly a fabrication, but appears genuine, edge with several test punches, very fine and intriguing

Katak or Cuttack was an important Mughal port and regional capital in Odisha (Bengal). Despite its importance gold coins of this mint are very rare. KM lists a couple of Ilahi Mohurs (KM 255.9), but this example has no Ilahi month and bears a reverse with a different regnal year and the 'sahib qirani' epithet usually found on mohurs of KM 254 type
