Admiral Horatio Nelson, Greenwich Pensioner's Medal, WM Medal, 1845, by E. Avern, ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY. on Garter around, uniformed bust left, rev. TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF THE NELSON TESTIMONIAL TRAFALGAR SQUE., view of Nelson's column and Trafalgar Square, 21 OCTOBER 1844 in exergue, plain edge, 62mm, 87.04g (Eimer -; BHM -; Hardy 97), pierced for suspension as usual for this medal, lightly surfaces marked to otherwise pleasing surfaces, with much original proof-like appearance to the edges of devices, extremely fine for this type and very rare

On Wednesday, 2 April 1845, in a ceremony in the Painted Hall, this medal was presented to the In-Pensioners of Greenwich Hospital. Over 340 medals were distributed to the veterans, each of whom had served under the command of Admiral Nelson. Hardy notes, "It is now recognized that this medal, treated as unimportant in the past, is a true and worthy piece of history, each having been owned personally by one of Nelson's sailors."
