Early 20th Century, (c. 1917), Battle of Jerusalem Ring, bezel featuring the Jerusalem Cross, shoulders inscribed 'JERUSALEM' and '9 DEC 1917', plain interior, 4.59g, ring size approx. U, resized, made to commemorate the 9th December 1917 when British forces under the command of General Allenby captured Jerusalem, ending 400 years of Turkish rule, in great condition, only a few small scratches, very fine
Provenance
Found in a field adjacent to Highnam Church, near Gloucester, 2021
The find spot was used as a camp by the US Army Corps of Engineers and three of its battalions (the 51st, 291st and the 296th US Army Combat Engineers), in preparation for D-Day. It is likely that one of the US soldiers lost this ring at this time. The 296th Battalion landed on Omaha Beach in June 1944 where it cleared 15,000 land mines. 300 years earlier, the site had been the scene of a skirmish during the English Civil War.
