Wessex, Edward the Elder (899-924), 'Portrait' Type, Penny, Tila, + EADVVEARD REX, finely incised laureate and draped bust left, rev. TILI M | ONE TA, the TA inverted, in two lines divided by row of cross pattées, trefoil above and below, 1.55g [23.92grns], 12h (CTCE 40; cf. SCBI 26 [East Anglia], 879 [Morley St Peter]; Vatican Hoard 451 = Lockett 2713 = SCBI 20 [Mack], 751 same reverse die; BMC III; North 651; Spink 1084), inconsequential rim loss between 5 and 8 o'clock, otherwise of excellent metal, dappled field tone overlying uniform original surfaces, a really good very fine with an exceptional portrait, excessively rare in open commerce, with only one example of Tila recovered each from the Morley St. Peter and Vatican troves
