The Royal Mint lost no time in marking the passing of Queen Elizabeth II by gaining the Royal Assent for a series of Memorial Issues at a Meeting of the Privy Council on 13 September 2022. It is exceedingly rare to mark the passing of a Monarch in this way. Indeed it was actively discussed after the passing of King George V in January 1936 whether such commemoratives would be released, to which the answer was a firm 'no'. As a result one has to venture back to 1820, to record a time when a 'Memorial' Coin was officially produced by the Royal Mint, and the rare circumstance of two monarchs appearing on a coinage in the same year of issue. Owing to the pre-production of Gold Britannias for this calendar year, it is also possible to receive 'Posthumous' examples of the late Queen alongside new issues of His Majesty the King.
