Note: After the Japanese occupation of Malaya, the Cable and Wireless station became a vital link to the west coast of Australia. In March 1942, the C & W station was shelled by a Japanese warship, but little damage was done. However a radio message was sent to Batavia advising thee damage was so severe that the station would have to close. This message was intercepted (as planned) by the Japanese, and consequently no effort was made to occupy the islands.
