"1838 Early History of Post Office/gives specimens of early Postmarks" in the hand of Herbert Joyce, third secretary of the Post Office. This extract illustrates some examples of early Dockwra handstamps from the Hermitage and Bishopsgate Offices, as well as the time handstamps for 9 p.m. and 12 mid-day on Wednesday. It is incorrectly written that the Dockwra's are the earliest known, Henry Bishop is completely ignored. John Palmer is well spoken of "The beneficial regulations of Mr. Palmer who introduced mail coaches, vastly improved the safety, regularity and celerity of the transmission of letters, and greatly increased the revenue
