1790 (31 March), letter from R. Cumberland at Tunbridge-Wells, to Lord Walsingham (Postmaster-General from July 1787 to July 1794), asking for the removal of the current postmaster, Mr. Jasper Sprange, to be replaced by William Knight, and giving, in some detail, his reasons.
Note: Herbert Joyce, third secretary of the Post Office writes, on page 408 of his book "The History of the Post Office" (1893) "… in the same year (1823) passes away at Tunbridge Welles, James Sprange, the courtly old Postmaster, who up to the date of his last illness might be seen pacing the Pantiles scrupulously dressed in the costume of the reign of George the second, even to the long ruffles".
