Somaliland Field Force
Fourth Expedition
F.P.O. 46

Upper Sheikh: 1903 (21 Nov.) a letter to South Kensington bearing India Q.V. 1a. tied by a good strike of the type D5 c.d.s., the reverse with Base Office Berbera and Aden (26.11) c.d.s. The letter, sent by Capt. William Dugmore of the North Staffordshire regiment. The chatty contents give a clear insight into the dislike of General Manning and includes, " .... we had a very bad time of it under Manning, but no one would have minded if it had only been successful ... on account of the absolute incompetence, lack of most elementary military knowledge, & want of courage displayed by Manning throughout ... what made everyone so very sick with Manning was the dirty, low despatch, excusing himself at the expense of the poor fellows who were killed ... there is little doubt that Manning is a rank coward ... We all hope and trust Egerton will succeed as he is not only and exceedingly nice man but a good general as well"
