1899 October 3, Press Telegram dated a week prior to the war beginning on 10 October, sent to the Echo London on a ZAR telegraph form, with 1/4d in stamps cancelled at Pretoria, advising from Bloemfontein that "artillery left yesterday for Van Reenens Pass, other detachments for Bethulie, Boshof or Kimberley...All able bodied men called out".
