Cup of Sorrows
1896 Coronation
A pair of enamel beakers with the joint cyphers of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra, the Imperial eagle on the reverse, surrounded by a geometric pattern. Manufactured as a gift to those gathered on the Khodynka Field in Moscow on 18/30 May 1896 following the coronation of the Tsar and Tsarina. A stampede resulted in the deaths of over a thousand and the beaker was forever known as the "Cup of Sorrows". These examples with some wear to the gilding (100mm in height, 90mm in diameter) (2)
