Note: On 8th November 1922 a referendum in Southern Rhodesia was due to decide between the country joining the Union of South Africa and becoming a self-governing colony.
In (confident) expectation that the result would be to join the Union, essays were proposed to prepare for an issue to celebrate the event.
In the event the electorate voted 8774:5989 (74%) for responsible government.
