1932 (21 Apr.) envelope to London carried aboard the Garden record attempt flight from Cape Town to Croydon; the envelope itself bearing South Africa 1d. tied by Cape Town c.d.s. and with large 'found with contents' bilingual cachet in black alongside and three line "accident at abercorn/ 22 april 1932,/ flight abandoned" in black at lower left, 'abercorn' c.d.s. also applied to each crash cover recovered from this flight. Note:
On 21st April 1932 Oscar Garden attempted a record flight from Cape Town to Croydon in a Spartan Hermes bi-plane, and after passing through Bulawayo, Salisbury and Broken Hill, the plane crashed at Abercorn, Northern Rhodesia due to engine problems.
Garden himself survived the crash and returned to England with the salvagable parts of his aircraft by sea from Mombasa.
