Abyssinian Field Force
1868 (2(-) Jan.) stampless envelope to a member of the Dutch Imperial Guard, Utrecht, Holland, sent by a Foreign Correspondent accompanying the Expedition. The cover bears rates of "1/1" for the British postage and "70" for the Dutch charge and a good strike of Suez transit (6.2) alongside; the reverse with a good strike of "field force post office/abyssinia" in black (the second date slug is not readable) with London c.d.s. (26.2) and Dutch postman's handstamp. A rare and interesting cover, the date suggests that this was sent from Senafe, the first of the expedition's three base camps. Photo

provenance:
Dougie Elliott, September 20016

Note: Less than ten stampless envelopes exist from the expedition
