On 9th December the name of Labuan Island was changed into Maeda-shima (meaning Maeda island) in honor of the Lt. Gen. Toshinari Maeda (North Borneo Commander) who died in an air crash on 5th September 1942 en route from Kuching to Labuan. The Cancellation in Japanese carachters reading Maeda-shima/North Borneo was used only from 18th November 1943 to 7th May 1945.
