New Zealand
1906 Christchurch Exhibition, 1d. claret, large part original gum; faint trace of soiling on gum at top, barely apparent on face. An attractive example of this rare stamp. S.G. 371a, £12,500

Note: One sheet of the 1d. printed in an experimental claret colour is believed to have been available to the Exhibition Post Office. Owing to the restriction in force it seems that no single individual can have bought more than six examples. Several covers are known dated after the Exhibition closed all bearing three examples. Hence the authentic source and use of these stamps remains difficult to verify. It is certain however that of up to fourteen sheets of the claret known to have been in Post Office archives, a number of examples have been included in presentation collections etc. and thus found their way onto the market.
