Great Britain
1841-53 One Penny Red-Brown
"Black" Plates
Plate 2: PK, touched at right, good to large margins other sides, tied by a fine strike of the black Jersey Maltese Cross to entire letter from St. Helier, Jersey to Dorsetshire, with a fine Jersey c.d.s. of 15 March 1841 on the reverse. A highly significant cover, being the earliest known date for Plate 2 (a cover dated 12 March has now been relegated to a footnote in Allan Oliver's volume of earliest dates), as well as the earliest recorded use of the Jersey Maltese Cross, Rockoff & Jackson citing the earliest known date as 29 March. The letter within has been refolded to show the heading St. Helier Jersey March 15th. 1841. A new discovery from a volume of original correspondence. Photo.
