1918 S.S. Kingstonian rescued mail duo addressed to England including stampless envelope showing Recovered from the Sea in manuscript and on the reverse 'found open (or torn) and officially secured' label; 5m. postal stationery envelope showing boxed damaged by immersion/ in sea water. A very rare survival.

Note:
The steamer 'Kingstonian was torpedoed by the German submarine U-68 on 11th April 1918 in the Mediterranean Sea while sealing from Alexandria to Marseille. Badly damaged it was towed into Sardinia where the mail, about a fortnight's correspondence from Egypt and the Palestinian Front, was offloaded. On leaving Sardinia, the 'Kingstonian' was again torpedoed, this time by the German submarine U-48 and was sunk. Recovered mails were given either a chachet, label or manuscript explanatory marking'
