Lot: 1315

Mauritius
Post Paid Issue, 1848-59
Intermediate Impressions
1d. bright vermilion on greyish paper, [12] with small to large margins, touched at lower right, tied by "1" obliterator on large part 1857 (1 May) front addressed locally at Mahebourg, showing framed "Mahebourg" d.s. alongside, large part framed "inland" h.s. and Crowned Mauritius G.P.O. datestamp (1.5); the 1d. has been lifted and replaced. B.P.A. Certificate (1995). S.G. 10. Photo

Note: The 1d. rate was applied for local delivery within the village limits of Mahebourg. The use of the Mauritius G.P.O. datestamp for the same day should not belong to an internal drop letter, therefore the possibility of this cover being mistakenly put into the Port Louis mailbag is highly likely. This is the only example recorded.
