1929 Maryland Free State Flight Croydon to London
1929 (31 May) envelope from Croydon to Calcutta, marked "Printed matter", bearing GB ½d. with blue ink cross and India ½a. applied and cancelled on arrival (10 June), showing superb straight-line "maryland free state" h.s. in violet with another strike on reverse and endorsed "J.B. Scholte, pilot G-AADZ, "Maryland Free State", carried from London to Calcutta, June 10th 1929". Very rare, one of six known. Photo

Note: On 31 May 1929, Mr Van-Lear Black, his pilots Geysendorffer and Scholte, mechanic van Tereit and personal secretary J Lear Bayline, left Croydon for Tokyo. The flight reached Karachi after only five days and from there flew to Calcutta, where the flight had to be abandoned, as the aeroplane was severely damaged on landing as a result of the airfield.
