NGC Ch VF ~ Ex-Jewelry | Roman Empire, Septimius Severus (AD193-211) AV Aureus, struck 197/198, L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X laureate bust right, draped around left shoulder rev. VICT. AVG. G. COS. II. PP. Victory striding left, laurel wreath in right hand, palm frond in left, 7.34g (BMC 257 ; Calico 2553; RIC 120; Balderston coll. 29 (Glendining, 18 June 1937, this coin); cf. Gantz coll. 557 (Glendining, 27 May 1941)) a marvellous issue, tarnished slightly by scuffs at ten and twelve o'clock, incorrectly analysed as mounting marks. Wonderfully-struck, near extremely fine.
In NGC holder, brutally graded Choice Very Fine ~ Ex-Jewelry, with a 5/5 for strike, and a rather harsh 2/5 for surfaces (Cert. #6769436-001)
