This 1724 medal marks the death of Joseph Clemens of Bavaria (1702-1723). The third son of Duke Ferdinand of Bavaria and Henrietta Adelaide of Savoy, Clemens was destined for a life in the church from a young age. He became the coadjutor of Regensburg, Freising and Berchtesgaden in 1683, 1684 and 1685 respectively, and would eventually be bishop. Pope Innocent XI confirmed him as Archbishop of Cologne before he had turned eighteen, which is regarded one of the causes of the Nine Years War. In 1702 he was elected as Bishop of Hildesheim.
