During the mid-nineteenth century, there arose several revolutions throughout various Italian states, mirroring similar uprisings throughout Europe. There were organized revolts in Sicily and the mainland, led by those who desired a more liberal government, often Italian nationalists who were intellectuals seeking freedom from control from the Austrian Empire. On the 18 March 1848, one of the most famous nationalist uprisings began. It has become known as the 'Five Nights of Milan', a rebellion against the Habsburg government in the city of Milan which saw five days of intense rioting in the street, resulting in the driving out of Austrian General Radetsky and his soldiers from the city. This action marked the beginning of the first Italian War of Independence.
