The Wilhelm Hüffer (1821-1895) Collection of European Coins and Medals
with his envelope
The Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata was replaced with the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (Silver River Province) after the 1810 "May Revolution". Within the territory lay the Province of Potosí, where there were many silver mines. As a result, Potosí found itself at risk of invasions from Royalist troops in the Army of the Northand. The area was occupied by this army several times including from May to December 1813 and April to July 1815. It is during the former occupation that this coin was minted at the Potosí mint and is often considered to be Argentina's first national currency.
