The obverse of this medal was initially designed to commemorate an alliance between England, France and the United Dutch Provinces, but was repurposed later the same year to celebrate the double destruction of the second Spanish 'Armada'; firstly when the English fleet attacked Calais and destroyed all of King Philip II's invasion equipment, and secondly when a storm destroyed another Spanish fleet off Cape Finisterre.
