Henry VIII, with Katharine of Aragon (1509-1547), Second Coinage, George Noble [of 6-Shillings and 8 Pence], struck 5 November 1526 - 1529, Tower, (m.m.) hENRIC'x DI 'x G 'x R '+ AGL ': Z : FRAnC 'x DnS : hIBERn, ship surmounted by rose and crucifix mast dividing h and K, twisted rigging 2/1, with bowsprit, waves lapping below, rev. (m.m.) TALI : DICA : SIGnO : MES 'x FLVCTVARI : nEQVIT ', St George lancing Dragon, [Median Spink XRF: ~ 98.925% Au; ~ 0.975% Ag; ~ 0.208% Cu], 4.596g [70.93grns], 12h, m.m. rose (Murdoch I, 415 = Hird 32 same reverse die; Carlyon-Britton [1938], F12/26 same dies; Stewartby III, 977 same dies; Schneider I, 576; North 1785; Spink 2270), die softness to sharpest detailing with numerous 'contact marks' and stippling from the unforgiving Chiltern geology, otherwise residually lustrous and evidently 'fresh' of surface; still exhibiting the preparatory die lines across fields; mildly crimped with rim disturbance at 12 o'clock and a minor split at 5 o'clock, nevertheless on a full round planchet, struck details very fine and better still to peripheries, a talisman of the Tudor coinage and lauded connoisseur rarity from an 'unique' die combination

Provenance

Found on 8 January 2023 in the Chiltern foothills in the backyard of a Tudor House a short walk from a Manor house seized by Henry VIII
