The John Chatwin Collection | Stephen 'of Blois' (1135-1154), Definitive Issues, 'Watford' Type, Penny, c. 1136-1145, uncertain mint and moneyer, [+ STI]EFN[E REX], crowned bust right, holding sceptre in right hand, rev. cross moline with a fleur in each angle, 1.45g, 12h (North 873; BMC I; Spink 1278), the legends and peripheries typically flat, with a minor striking split at 5 o'clock, otherwise a technically excellent example for this notorious issue, of outstanding fabric, strictly a very fresh and bold very fine, but in truth much as struck, rare thus
