The John Chatwin Collection | William II 'Rufus' (1087-1100), 'Cross in Quatrefoil', Penny, 1089-1092, Thetford, Folcard, + PILLELM REXI, crowned bust facing, holding sword over right shoulder, rev. + FOLCIERD ON DTFR, quatrefoil with pellet in angle enclosing a cross potent with annulet at centre, 1.40g [21.61grns], 7h (North 852; BMC II [Coll. no. 155]; Spink 1259), subtle crimping, and patchy striking softness, otherwise evenly toned, better than fine for issue, and an extremely rare type for this moneyer, with only a Cut Halfpenny recovered from the Billingsgate Thames spoil in 1988 for comparison on EMC
