Auction: 23004 - Ancient and British Coins - Featuring the 'White Rose' Collection
Lot: 549

George I (1714-1727), Half-Guinea, 1725, second laureate head right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, six strings to harp, four hearts to Hanoverian shield, edge obliquely milled, 4.16g [64.2grns], 5h (Ellerby 92; King 158; Stratos 35; Schneider II, 552; MCE 274; EGC 546; Spink 3637), a pearlescent and arresting example with dabbles of orange-red peripheral toning 'burn' encroaching on full lustrous and subtly frosted-bloom fields, typical die softness to hair, otherwise a most pleasing extremely fine, the reverse choice uncirculated, rare in this exemplary state

The Stratos sale (Spink 267, 15 September 2020, lot 35) presented from the Hayleigh collection suffered from peripheral die softening to the tops of the legends, a fault which is not translated here. In that case it did not prevent it obtaining the lofty NGC MS62 grade. One is able to instantly recognise the technical superiority of the specimen offered today, even without third-party certification.
