Æthelred II (978-1016), 'Long Cross' Type, Penny, 997-1003, Rochester, Eadsige, + ÆÐELRÆD REX ANGLORX, draped bust left, rev. + EDSIGE MQO ROFEC, voided long cross, 1.67g [25.8grns], 12h (FEJ 669 same dies; SCBI 7, 1062; SCBI 20 [Mack], 954 same dies; BEH 3285; North 774; BMC IVa [no. 305] Spink 1151), a few peck marks to otherwise handsomely cabinet toned surfaces with further iridescent flare in recesses, struck on a pleasingly round and subtly crimped flan, extremely fine, seldom encountered in this state, particularly for this scarce provincial mint and with this level of eye appeal
