Auction: 23004 - Ancient and British Coins - Featuring the 'White Rose' Collection
Lot: 353

(g) USA, Gold 'Liberty Head' Eagle of 10-Dollars, 1888 $10, Philadelphia, by Christian Gobrecht, edge milled, 16.76g, 6h (KM 102; PCGS 8712; NGC 266K), lightly bagmarked and wiped with a dry cloth, otherwise residual cartwheel lustre, a bolder very fine / almost extremely fine, a rarer year of issue with only 132,921 reportedly struck, very scarce in higher grades

Given the hiatus in regular gold production from the Philadelphia mint in the 1880s, as outlined in the John Robert Fletcher 1888 'Full US Proof Set' sale held in these rooms on 24 September 2022 (Spink Auction 281, lot 1888), 1888 would prove an important year for the re-introduction of specimen and currency specie under coiner William Steel. Almost all encountered examples are the result of the rush to circulate fresh coin in that calendar year rendering this otherwise unassuming specimen of that much more interest in this honest higher grade to the Ten Dollar Eagle connoisseur.
