William Hunter was born at Everton, Liverpool on 13 March 1933. He served with the 1st South Lancashire Regiment in Sudan from September 1951 - March 1952, but on his return to the U.K. in March 1952 was taken on strength with The King's Regiment and sailed to Korea in June 1952. Hunter was wounded by shellfire on 12 October 1952. He returned to the U.K. in July 1953 and served with 5th Battalion, The Kings Regiment (T.A.). Upon his discharge in 1955 he was living at 128 Herschell Street, Liverpool.
