Joseph Sykes was born on 19 April 1854 and studied at Madras and Glasgow University Hospitals. He was appointed as S.M.D. Madras from 29 June 1874-23 September 1876, and qualified as L.R.C.P. Edinburgh in 1879 and L.F.P.S.G. in 1879 being appointed full Surgeon on 31 October 1879. He served on the North West Frontier at Mahsud-Waziri and then went on to serve in Egypt seeing action at Tel-el-Kebir and Kassassin being entitled to the Egypt medal with clasp and Khedive's Star. Sykes was appointed Surgeon Major on 31 October 1891 and then Lieutenant Colonel on 31 October 1899. He was placed on the Supplementary List on 25 March 1907 and retired on 14 December 1909. He died at Folkestone on 5 May 1925.
