A 'Relief of Kut, March 1916' I.O.M. awarded to Lance Naik L. Khan, 2/19th Punjabis attached 59th Scinde Rifles (Frontier Force)

I.O.M., Government of India, Military Department Notification No. 1387 states:

'For conspicuous gallantry on the 8 March 1916, when he fought with magnificent courage in the enemy's trenches. He was one of a party who met the hostile bombers and held them back while their own supply of grenades lasted, though attacked from both sides. With one of their officers they were the last of their company to leave the enemy's trenches. During the retirement the officers was wounded and these men refused to leave him and brought him in under heavy fire and at great risk of capture.'

Lal Khan was serving attached to the 59th Scinde Rifles (Frontier Force) during the Great War. This unit was stationed in Mesopotamia on 16 March 1916 when Khan won his award, likely during the attempts to relieve Kut; sold together with an original letter from the India Officer Records confirming the recipient's entitlement and providing a citation.
