Sold by Order of a Direct Descendant
The interesting and unusual 'Grand Order of the Far East' bestowed upon Captain J. B. Glencross D.S.O., R.N. who, after a distinguished Great War career as a submarine commander, went on to command the Fourth Submarine Flotilla in the Far East
Grand Order of the Far East, brass-coloured metal, 72mm x 128mm, engraved to the obverse and reverse respectively 'Grand Order of the Far East, Captain, J. B. Glencross. DSO., Captain. S. IV., 1927-1929'; 'Defence of Chefoo. 1928., Japanese Cruises 1927-1928., Bias Bay Patrol 1927-1928.', in its original blue velvet presentation case, good very fine
John Buller Glencross was Captain (S) of the Fourth Submarine Flotilla from March 1927 - February 1929, additionally being appointed to command H.M.S. Titania - the submarine depot ship Hong Kong - at the same time. It is likely that mention of the 'Defence of Chefoo 1928' refers to an event in July of that year, when nationalist troops clashed with 5,000 rebels; a sailor from the local United States Navy squadron was wounded, and the British and Japanese Consuls requested protection from their respective navies.
Sold together with a white linin 'shawl' bearing Japanese characters, possibly originally used to wrap the medal within its case, and a letter from E. R. Mogra & Co of Canton, dated 24 December 1928 and addressed to Glencross at H.M.S. Titania, Hong Kong. For the recipient's medals and a biographical note, see Lot 80.
