Brynley Isaac Jones was born on 12 August 1926, a native of Pontygwaith, Glamorgan and was a newspaper boy when he enlisted on 31 August 1944 in the Welch Regiment. He served initially with the 21st (Holding) Battalion at home before serving in North West Europe with the 9th Royal Welsh Fusiliers until June 1945 whereupon he transferred to the 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers. Serving with the Welch Regiment in Java during the period February-March 1946 (Medal & clasp), he thence served in Burma.
On Friday 7 March seven members of the 2nd Battalion, Welch Regiment were guarding a train from Thazi to Kalaw, when it was attacked by 40 well-armed Dacoits. All seven were killed, the trains contents were ransacked, and passengers on board were robbed and murdered.
Jones is buried alongside his six comrades who were killed during the ambush at Taukkyan War Cemetery in Myanmar; sold together with an article copied from the BBC website relating to the attack, a copy of the recipients service papers and an extract from the Regimental History.
