Matthew Boulton's Medal for Trafalgar 1805, white metal, privately engraved to the reverse field: D.S. Ferris, H.M.S. Britania, contained within an attractive silver case glazed with lunettes, the suspension ring hallmarked for Birmingham 1807, the whole contained within a patriotic Admiral Nelson gilded brass box, this decorated with a portrait of the Admiral, trophies-of-arms, the underside bearing details of his most famous battles, good very fine and better
David Ferris is noted as an Able Seaman aboard the 100-gun H.M.S. Britannia at the Battle of Trafalgar. Born in New York in 1779, Ferris joined Britannia from Puissant in August 1803. Remaining long in the Royal Navy and rising through the ranks accordingly, he was Captain of the Maintop in the San Josef in May 1809, Boatswain's Mate in the Bulwark in September 1815, and Boatswain in the Cordelia (1824), Cruizer (1827), Delight (1828) and Bacchante (1831) respectively. He does not appear to have lived to claim a Naval General Service Medal.
