Maharajpoor Star 1843 (Private John Leafe H.M. 40th Regt.), fitted with contemporary silver straight-bar suspension bearing a 'clasped hand' style, typical for this Regiment, good very fine

The 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot saw very heavy fighting at the Battle of Maharajpoor on 29th December 1843 when, as the principal infantry battalion in the central column for the attack on the Maratha artillery positions, advanced under very heavy fire from both artillery and infantry before engaging in hand-to-hand combat and eventually overcoming their foe.

This Medal accompanied the awards of Major-General C. A. Barwell C.B. (see Lot 336) and it is therefore possible Leafe was known to the General in some capacity.
