William George Wilson (c.1850)
Little information is known about an artist going by the name of William George Wilson. However, his date of birth and an interest in landscape as a subject matter perhaps suggests that the artist is a one George Wilson. Wilson was born near Cullen in Banffshire and went on to study at the Royal Academy and then to the Slade School of Fine Art. There he formed a friendship with the portrait painter J. B. Yeats, with whom he founded an informal artistic group called ‘The Brotherhood’. Members included Edwin Ellis, John Nettleship and Sidney Hall, all of whom were influenced by the work of William Blake. Wilson was an accomplished draughtsman, and was interested in the patterns produced in nature by foliage. His landscapes were often very detailed. Wilson's interest in the realistic depiction of the natural world would therefore account for this medal being awarded for the best copy of a landscape.
