Auction: 22180 - British and World Coins and Medals Featuring the 'Manx' Collection - e-Auction

Visit of Queen Victoria to the City of London, AR Uniface Cliché Medal, 1837, by W. Wyon, VICTORIA REGINA, diademed bust left, 55m, 8.62g (Eimer 1304; BHM 1775), some damage to the edges and light wear to the diadem, otherwise bold very fine and rare
This medal was produced by William Wyon for the Corporation of the City of London. Permission was granted for one to be struck in gold to be presented to the Queen, as well as a number in silver and bronze for other members of the Royal Family and officials.
A cliché medal of this type was previously offered in Spink's Numismatic Circular, in February 1906, No. 24426. It is noted that it was sold 'without case. Glazed'. It is therefore presumably believed that these cliché examples, including this specimen, are the 'shell medals' referred to in the Mint records relating to the production of this medal.
