Archbishop Sharp, Part II, Morton & Eden 91, 7 December 2017, lot 114 [part]
Dr. John Sharp (1645-1714) was Archbishop of York from 1691 until his death in 1714, and from a note in his Will we know that he began collecting coins in 1687. He was in contact with other numismatists of his day, especially Ralph Thoresby of Leeds, the recipient of his ‘“‘Observations on the Coinage of England, with his letter to Mr. Thoresby, 1698-9”, published rather later in 1785 and for which he is best known to numismatists of the present day. A most useful list of relative works can be found in the Bibliography of ‘The Life and Times of John Sharp, Archbishop of York”, by A. Tindal Hart, S.P.C.K., 1949.
