Great Britain: Sir James Laing and Sons Limited, £10 preference shares, 1[899], #2, signed by Arthur Laing and Hugh Laing as directors, attractive piece with large wooden ship in dry dock, red. Established in Sunderland in 1793 and formed as a Limited Liability company in 1898. Builders of high class passenger liners for companies such as Cunard and P.& O. In difficulty following Sir James's death in 1901 but rescued by Sir James Marr. Became a subsidiary of Sunderland Shipbuilding Dry Docks and Engineering in 1954, eventually passing to Doxford & Sunderland Shipbuilding in 1961. Arthur Laing, 1856-1901, and Hugh Laing, born 1871, sons of Sir James Laing, both directors of several other shipping companies. Hugh was heavily involved with the first oil tanker, built for Marcus Samuel of Shell. Neatly cancelled, EF.
