Arthur A. J. Lassoie was born at Meslu-L'Eveque and was serving with the 5e Regiment, Chasseurs à Pied on the outbreak of the Great War. This unit formed part of the 16th (Mixed) Brigade, 5th Division at Mons in 1914 and along with the rest of the Belgian Army was forced back to the Yser River in spite of fierce resistance. Lassoie's Division fought in the actions at Antwerp, Eppegem and Diksmuide. They formed part of the Belgian right flank, lying next to the town of Diksmuide; sold together with information on the 2e and 5e Chasseurs à Pied and the recipient's extract from the Guldenboek der Vuurkaart.
