Frederick Charles Rush was born on 4 November 1879 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England. By 1914 he had served some 18 years in Lord Strathcona's Horse, including being present in the rank of Quarter-Master Sergeant (Farrier) as part of the 1911 Coronation Contingent.
Rush was one of the original 10 officers and 120 men of Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) who left Winnipeg on Sunday, 16 August 1914 for Valcartier. He was a farrier by profession and was the unit Regimental Sergeant-Major, having served in this capacity since January 1914, when he replaced Lieutenant Malcolm Docherty as a result of the latter's commissioning. Rush was promoted in Valcartier in September 1914, becoming Lieutenant (QM), and he turned over his duties to Warrant Officer Fred Tompkins on 16 September 1914. He later left Lord Strathcona's Horse for service in 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade HQ, and served as a Major with the 140th Battalion. Rush died on 31 January 1954.
